HOUSTON, Texas - Baylor's women's track and field team recorded 122.5 points to take second at the Tom Tellez Invitational at the University of Houston's Lewis/Tellez track and field complex. The host Houston Cougars won with a total of 140 points. Texas A&M took third on the women's side (109) followed by Syracuse (104.5) and TCU (83). With a total of 91 points, the Baylor men's team took third. Houston won the men's competition with 140.5 points followed by Texas A&M at 120 points. The Texas men finished fourth (62.16) ahead of TCU (53.33) and Syracuse (53).
In the opening race of the day, freshman Angela Marvin turned in a regional qualifying time of 10:53.17 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In her first career steeplechase race, Marvin set the meet record. She was followed to the finish line by teammates Stephanie Bennett (2nd; 11:01.78), Leah Marbach (3rd; 11:05.90) and Jessa Vacek (4th; 11:14.49).
All-American April Holliness recorded her second regional-qualifying mark in the long jump with a first-place leap of 6.26-meters (20-6 ?). All-American Danielle Myricks also jumped her way to regionals, winning the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:00.51.
The other three regional qualifying marks were recorded on the men's side. Seth Billy also clocked his second regional qualifying time, winning the 400 hurdles in 51.44 seconds. Freshman Wil Fitts had a regional qualifying time in the 800, clocking a 1:51.12. The men's 1,600 relay also met the regional qualifying standard, running a 3:10.43.
Sophomore Lakadron Ivery had another strong meet, taking second in the 100 (11.66) and the 200 (23.5). The women's 1,600 relay also ran well, finishing second with a time of 3:51.34. Jordan Willmann took second in the 800 with a time of 2:19.02. The men's distance runners also fared well. Rob Morrow (8:32.27) and Sam Bernal (8:33.90) finished 1-2 in the 3,000-meter race while Nick Devenport won the 1,500 (3:55.09). Other top performances for the men came from Joel Martin, who took second in the 400 (48.07), and Jordan Lewis, who finished second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.18.
The Bears travel down the road to Austin for the Texas Relays April 3-5.
