ALL IN THE FAMILY - Former Baylor baseball great Ted Uhlaender, whose eight years in the major leagues were divided between Minnesota, Cleveland and Cincinnati, and wife Karen are building a home in Colorado. It's not that they have anything against Ted's native McAllen, but they are looking for snow - lots of it! Their daughter Katie recently won the 2003 Verizon Women's National Skeleton Championship at Lake Placid, New York, and similar performances could put her on course for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. To understand the skeleton event just think about lying head first on a small board with 22mm blades and rapidly descending solo down an icy, twisting bob-sled run. To participate in winter sports this year Katie had to bypass the softball season at San Diego State University, where she is a pitcher for the Aztecs. Prior to the Lake Placid win she had finished eighth in the World Junior Women's Championships in Germany. When not beaming over their daughter's heroics, Ted continues to scout for the San Francisco Giants while Karen is a ski instructor in Breckenridge, Colorado. Does anyone remember that Uhlaender, who spent most of his big league career in the outfield, did some catching for the Bears in 1961, his final season at Baylor? . . .
MORE CONDOLENCES - Sadness continues to mount for members of Roger Goree's family. His father, J. W. Goree, died this week - only days after suffering a seizure just prior to funeral services for Roger's brother Steve. A memorial service for the elder Goree is planned for 2 p.m. Friday (March 7) at Laurel Lea Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As most know, Roger is the support services coordinator for the Baylor Athletic Department. If you care to drop him a line his address is 762 Greenwood, Waco, Texas, 76705 . . . State Rep. Robert Talton, R-Pasadena, recently passed a resolution in the Texas House of Representatives as a tribute to Bob Barfield, who died on May 26, 2002. A member of the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor based on decades of football coaching success at Cedar Bayou, Corrigan, Rosenberg, Robstown and Pasadena, Barfield also was backfield coach for the 1957 Sugar Bowl champion Baylor Bears. House Resolution No. 000362 ended with these words: "Be it further RESOLVED that an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert Earl Barfield." . . .
TOURNAMENTS TIME - Anyone living in the Dallas area or heading there for the Big 12 men's and women's basketball tournaments should think about participating in The Baylor Family Rally, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Spaghetti Warehouse, 1815 N. Market St. in downtown Dallas. The restaurant will serve as the official tournament headquarters for Baylor fans. The Lady Bears' action will take place March 11-15 at Reunion Arena and the men's tournament is scheduled for March 13-16 at the American Airlines Center. The Baylor Family Rally features a $25 buffet - including appetizers and dessert - and scouting reports from members of Baylor's athletic department. All tournament games will be shown on large-screen television. Space is limited, so immediately contact Karen Edwards at 1-800-BAYLOR-U, Option 6, or send e-mail to Karen_Edwards@baylor.edu. For tournament or ticket information, contact the Baylor athletic ticket office at 1-800-BAYLOR-U, Option 7, or log on to the Official Site of the Big 12 Conference or Ticketmaster . . . The Honorable Jim York, who pitched for the Bears in 1959 and 1960, was sworn in recently for another term as Judge of the 246th Family District Court in Houston . . .
