The annual Michael Johnson Classic kicked off today at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex. The hammer throw and steeplechase were contested along with the opening flights of the pole vault.
Leading Baylor on Day One was sophomore pole vaulter Lisa Padon. She cleared a career-best height of 10-11 ? to win the opening flight and advance to the finals Saturday afternoon. Freshman Mercy Wagner also had a career day in the event. The Lorena, Texas-native finished second on the day with a career-best mark of 10-6.
In the men's pole vault, Brad Settles finished fifth after clearing a height of 14-7 ?. Jacob combs cleared 13-7 ? to finish sixth.
The hammer throw was the other field event contested on Friday. On the women's side, Rachel Roessler took fifth with a heave of 124-1. Amber Barnes finished ninth with a best mark of 107-5. For the men, Austin Heape recorded a throw of 96-9 to take fifth place.
The steeplechase also was run on Friday. There were no Baylor competitors in the event. Alamar Cavada of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11:36.86) took the women's title while Oklahoma's Blake Culp (9:36.85) won the men's race.
The remainder of the events will be held on Saturday. Field events start the day at 9 a.m. with the running prelims slated for noon and the finals scheduled for 6 p.m.
