WACO, Texas - Eight outstanding athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Baylor Bears Track and Field team in 2003, head coach Clyde Hart announced on Wednesday. The signing class, which includes three sprinters, three distance specialists, a middle-distance and high jump athlete and one field event performer, joins three fall signees.
"We think it's an outstanding class both as athletes and as students," Hart said. "They should add to an already young team and help to make us a much stronger team next year."
Included in the group of sprinters are 200 and 400 meter specialists Rena Napoleon and Mark Teter and 100 and 200 runner Stephen Harbour. Napoleon won 100-meter 2A state titles in both 2001 and '02 as well as adding titles in the 200 and 400 last season while competing for Hilltop Baptist High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. Napoleon also ranked sixth in the nation indoors earlier this year clocking a 400 time of 54.96. Teter hails from San Antonio's Ronald Regean High School where he was a 5A district and regional champion in the 400. He placed fourth in the state in the event last year and recorded a personal-best time of 47.4. A native of Lorena, Texas, Harbour was the 3A District 18 gold medalist in both the 100 and 200 while competing for the Leopards.
A trio of Texas natives will be joining the cross country and distance runners. Brittany McGuire of Humble High School in Humble, Texas, who is coached by former Baylor distance runner Mike Gibson, qualified for the state meet clocking a season-best mile time of 5:05.36. Georgetown High School standout Chris Vidine recorded personal best times of 4:24.03 in the 1,600 and 9:27.87 in the 3,200. Christine Cobb of The Woodlands High School also will be joining the distance corps.
Kevin Mutai of Round Rock is a middle-distance runner as well as a high jumper. He was a 5A District 14 champion in both the 800 and the high jump, clearing a best height of 6-10.
Field event specialist Blake Havran also has signed with the Bears. The shot put and discus competitor is from All Saints Episcopal High School in Fort Worth, Texas.
Distance runners Brittany Brockman of Langham Creek High School in Houston and Monique Ortega from Mountwood High School in El Paso as well as hurdler Lauren Tillman of Collins Hill High School in Lawrenceville, Ga. signed with the Bears in the fall.
