WACO, Texas - A four-run sixth and a three-run seventh turned a close game into a lop-sided victory for sixth-ranked Nebraska here Sunday as the Huskers completed the Big 12 Conference softball series sweep with an 8-1 victory over Baylor. The Lady Bears fall to 25-18 overall and 1-7 in conference play with the loss. The Huskers improve to 28-9 and 5-4.
Baylor starter Cristin Vitek took a no-hitter into the sixth, despite trailing 1-0. Nebraska used a fielding error and a double steal for a run in the top of the first. However, the Huskers erupted for four runs on three hits and a Baylor error in the sixth. Nebraska added three more runs in the top of the seventh, capped by an Amanda Buchholz solo home run to left.
Meanwhile, Nebraska starter Peaches James solved the Baylor bats for the second straight day. James (15-7) allowed one run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Baylor got its lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Sarah Caudle doubled off the wall in center with one out, and April Luce followed with a single up the middle. Danelle Arnold then singled to left field, scoring Caudle.
Vitek (11-10) took the loss; she allowed seven runs, five earned, on three hits, four walks and three hit batters with four strikeouts.
The Lady Bears continue a seven-game home stand Tuesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Texas Tech at Getterman Stadium. Baylor swept a doubleheader at Texas Tech last season.
Notes: Nebraska now leads the all-time series 23-5. The Huskers are 7-1 all-time in Waco, 6-0 all-time at Getterman Stadium. ... The eight runs scored by Nebraska tied the Getterman Stadium record for most runs by an opponent (Northwestern State, 2001; Oklahoma, 2000).
