OKLAHOMA CITY - No. 16 Baylor put together two big innings, and Steven White tossed a three-hit shutout as the Bears topped Missouri 11-0 in a seven-inning run-rule game here Wednesday in first-day action of the 2003 Big 12 Conference Tournament at Bricktown Ballpark.
It was the first-ever run-rule game in the seven-year history of the Big 12 Tournament. Baylor's 11 runs is the second-highest offensive output by a Bears' team in Big 12 Tournament play; the 2000 squad plated 12 runs in a first-round win over Texas A&M.
White scattered three hits on the day, two off the bat of Missouri leadoff hitter Jayce Tingler, who led off the game with a flare single into right-center. White did not allow another hit until Tingler lined a single to right with one out in the fifth. After a strikeout of Zane Taylor, Baylor catcher Josh Ford gunned down Tingler on a stolen base attempt to end the rally.
Missouri's only other hit of the day was a double off the top of the wall in left-center by Cody Ehlers with one out in the sixth. From there, White retired five straight Tigers to close out the shutout, Baylor's first in Big 12 Tournament play since blanking Missouri 2-0 at the 1999 event.
Mark Saccomanno's laced a two-run triple with one out in the fourth to get the scoring started for the Bears. It was his first triple of the season and the first of Baylor's six extra-base hits on the day. Ross Bennett followed Saccomanno with an RBI single and then moved to third on Trey Webb's double down the line in left.
Kyle Reynolds made it four straight hits for the Bears, plating Bennett with a single to shallow center. Kevin Sevigny, making his first career start, capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to right.
Baylor added six more runs on seven hits in the top of the sixth, all coming with two outs. Sevigny roped his first double of the season to right-center and then scored on a Chris Durbin two-bagger down the line in left to get things started for the Bears. Starting with Sevigny, seven straight Baylor hitters reached base, culminating in Zach Dillon's two-run, pinch-hit single.
Saccomanno finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Ford was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Every Baylor starter had at least one hit save David Murphy, who walked twice and scored twice.
White finished with five strikeouts against two walks on the day. His fifth strikeout was the 300th of his career; he joins Jason Jennings (377, 1997-1999) as the only Baylor hurlers to ever reach the 300-strikeout plateau.
Baylor advances to Thursday's 8 p.m. game in the winners' bracket. The Bears face the winner of the Nebraska-Kansas game, which was played late Wednesday night.
