WACO, Texas - Baylor's outstanding play continued Saturday night as the No. 20 Bears finished out a doubleheader sweep of Kansas State, winning the nightcap 10-1 after taking the first game 11-1 in seven innings at Baylor Ballpark.
On the day, the Bears (33-17, 13-10 Big 12) scored 21 runs while giving up just two to the Wildcats (12-32, 2-18 Big 12).
Baylor starter Sean Walker (7-4) picked up where Steven White left off in the first game, pitching into the ninth and allowing just one run. Walker struck out a career-best seven batters in eight-plus innings.
After scoring eight runs in the first inning of the first game Saturday, Baylor put up a five spot in the first Saturday night against KSU starter Jim Ripley (3-6). Chris Durbin led off the game with a walk, and David Murphy followed with his eighth home run of the year. After two outs, Zach Dillon walked and Jared Clements singled, setting the stage for a two-run double by Trey Webb. Webb later scored on an error with the Bears' fifth run.
Durbin and Murphy each scored again in the second, and Murphy scored a third time in the fourth as the Bears upped their lead to 9-0.
Walker cruised through the first three innings, retiring the first 10 batters he faced before giving up three singles and a run in the fourth. That would be it for the Wildcats, as Walker settled back down and allowed just two more hits the rest of the way. Tyler Bullock took over for Walker after the sophomore walked the first batter in the ninth, and the freshman retired all three batters he faced to end the game.
Murphy's home run extended his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games, the longest streak by a Bear since Kelly Shoppach's 28-game tear in 2001. Murphy's streak is the sixth-longest in recent team history.
KSU reliever Brett Bagley pitched well out of the pen, holding Baylor to just four hits and one run over the final 4 2/3 innings, but the damage was done.
The one down side to the day for Baylor was the loss of Mark Saccomanno, who hurt his right shoulder sliding into home in game one of the doubleheader. The extent of the injury is not yet known; he will be examined next week.
Baylor will look for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Murphy's three hits Saturday gave him 95 for the season, just seven safeties shy of Eric Nelson's team record... Durbin scored four runs, giving him 74 on the year, three runs short of Nelson's record in that category.
