WACO, Texas - Baylor sophomore Michael Griffin was one of the final nine players invited to the USA National Team trials this summer in Tucson, Ariz.
Griffin, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, hit .350 with 11 home runs and a team-best 76 RBI this season and was named both first-team All-Big 12 and first-team Academic All-Big 12. He led the squad with eight triples and set a new school record with 26 doubles while splitting time between left field and third base.
From June 21-27, Griffin will compete against a total of 34 players at the National Team Trials for a spot on the 20-man roster that will represent the United States at the 2003 Pan-American Games.
Griffin joins a select few Baylor players to have been selected for work with the USA National Team. Only five others Bears have been so honored: Pat Combs (1988), Jason Jennings (1997-98), Bryan Loeb (1998), Jon Topolski (1998) and Zane Carlson (2000). Additionally, head coach Steve Smith was an assistant coach for the 1998 team.
The 20-man team will be announced June 27.
