HOUSTON - Senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz led Baylor with 16 kills as the Bears downed Houston, 3-1 (30-25, 26-30, 30-28, 30-17), in non-conference action Wednesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion. Freshman Desiree Guilliard-Young hit .440 for the match with 14 kills, while freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc recorded 12.0 blocks (3 solo).
LeBlanc also hit .429 with 10 kills and recorded the first double-digit block total by a Bear since Schwartz had 10.0 against Kansas on Sept. 27, 2000. Senior libero Stevie Nicholas led the Bears (4-4) defensively with 16 digs, while sophomore setter Emily Huston had 48 assists.
Baylor hit .250 in game one and got three kills each from Huston, Schwartz and Desiree Guilliard-Young. The Bears also recorded 6.0 blocks and won the game, 30-25.
The Cougars (2-4) won the first five points of the second game and took their largest lead of the game at 17-7. The Bears battled back behind Schwartz, who had five kills in the game, and outhit the Cougars for the game. After cutting the lead to 26-23, the Bears could get no closer as they fell, 30-26.
The Bears came from behind in the third game and won five-straight points on Schwartz's serve to tie the game, 27-27. Guilliard-Young had six kills in the game, while LeBlanc added two solo blocks and the kill on game point.
Baylor dominated the final game, winning the first four points. Behind eight kills from Schwartz, the Bears pushed their lead to as much as 25-10 before settling for a 30-17 win.
The Bears return to action when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for the Hampton Inn/JU Classic Friday and Saturday at Swisher Gymnasium. Baylor opens with Florida International on Friday at 3 p.m.
