WACO, Texas - Baylor placed four players in double digits in the kills column and Andrea Vakulya had a team-high 13 digs as the Bears defeated Florida International 30-22, 30-28, 27-30, 30-23 in first-day action of the Hampton Inn Classic hosted by Jacksonville University.
With the victory, the Bears improve to 5-4 on the season. FIU falls to 4-2.
Tisha Schwartz led all players with 18 kills while hitting at a .306 clip, pacing a Baylor squad that tallied 63 kills as a team. Desiree Guilliard-Young added 14 kills and hit .458 with seven blocks. Nicole LeBlanc had 10 kills and Vakulya chipped in with 14 kills.
Baylor hit .255 as a team while holding FIU to a .138 nod. The Panthers hit no higher than .229 in any of the four games, including a minus-.028 mark in the fourth game.
Meanwhile, the Bears came out on fire in game one, hitting .444 (15-3-27). Baylor out-dug FIU 51-45, and six different players had at least two blocks.
Jennifer Owens led FIU with 12 kills and 10 blocks.
Baylor returns to action Saturday, facing Wyoming at 10 a.m. CT and host Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Wyoming defeated the Bears in a close five-game match two weeks ago at the Baylor Classic.
