Volleyball Claims Hampton Classic Title

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young hit 1.000 for the first two games before finishing the match hitting .714 with 11 kills, while freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc led Baylor with 12 kills as the Bears captured the tournament championship at the Hampton Inn/JU Classic with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-17, 30-14) victory over host Jacksonville Saturday night at Swisher Gymnasium.

Senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz, who had 50 kills in three matches, was named the tournament's most valuable player, while freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakula, who recorded 41 kills for the weekend, was named to the all-tournament team.

The Bears (6-5) took control in game one behind the serve of sophomore setter Emily Huston, who served Baylor to a 4-0 lead, then helped the Bears push the advantage to 15-7 on her next turn. Guilliard-Young had six kills in the game and was perfect on her first 10 attacks on the night and Baylor took game one, 30-21.

In game two, Schwartz helped the Bears jump out to a 6-1 lead by serving four-straight points. Vakula had five kills and Baylor won the game, 30-17.

The final game was all Bears as Huston served Baylor to a 6-0 lead and LeBlanc had five kills as the Bears took the decisive game, 30-14.

Huston had 46 assists, and senior libero Stevie Nicholas had a match-high 16 digs. Lindsay Ward led Jacksonville with seven kills, and Radka Dimitrova recorded her 1,000th career kill for the Dolphins (1-6).

Baylor dropped its first match of the day to Wyoming, 3-1 (31-29, 30-21, 23-30, 30-27). Schwartz had 25 kills and 13 digs, while Vakula added 19 kills and 12 digs for the Bears. Nicholas led the Bears with 16 digs.

Wyoming's Michele Rauter led the Cowgirls to the win with a match-high 26 kills, while Vanessa Latimer added 11 and Jill Roslund 10. Amanda Miller also had a match-high 24 digs.

Baylor returns to action when it hosts Missouri in the Big 12 opener for both teams on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
