Volleyball Powers Past Iowa St., 3-1

AMES, Iowa - Baylor senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz hit .310 and recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 13 digs as the Bears fought past Iowa State, 3-1 (23-30, 30-26, 30-27, 30-26), in Big 12 action Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum. Freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakulya hit .393 and posted her third career double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.

Freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc had 12 kills and five blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Kelly Spriggs sparked the Bears (7-6, 1-1 Big 12) off the bench with nine kills. Sophomore setter Emily Huston had 54 assists, senior libero Stevie Nicholas posted 11 digs and sophomore outside hitter Stella Odion came up with five critical service aces.

Brittany Dalager had a match-high 18 kills and added 13 digs for the Cyclones (7-5, 0-2), while Dana Koziol had a match-high 17 digs. Ranae Pruess had 15 kills, while Katie Jessen added 11.

The Bears had trouble getting going in game one as they hit only .100 and made six service errors. LeBlanc had four kills, while Schwartz, Vakulya and Guilliard-Young added three each as Iowa State took the opening frame, 30-23.

Baylor also got off to a slow start in game two and called a timeout trailing, 17-11. The Bears then ripped off five-straight points to pull within one and tied the game, 18-18, on an ace by sophomore defensive specialist Marisa Kersten. The game was tied five more times, the last time at 26-26, when the Bears got back-to-back free-ball kills from Huston and freshman middle blocker Guilliard-Young, who had nine kills on the night. Odion then served up a pair of aces to close out the game, 30-26, and even the match.

Game three was a battle with nine ties, the last time at 21-21. The Bears then scored four-straight points behind the serve of Schwartz to take control. Schwartz and Vakulya each had five kills in the game as the Bears hit .262 and went on to win the game, 30-27.

The Bears jumped out to a 12-7 lead in game four, but the Cyclones scored five-straight points to tie the game at 12. The two sides tied six more times, including the last time at 21. Odion added two more aces to give the Bears a 24-21 lead and Guilliard-Young had another free-ball kill to push it to match point. Huston then served up another ace as the Bears clinched the match, 30-26.

Baylor returns to action when it hits the road for a non-conference match against Sam Houston State on Monday at 7 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.
