HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Baylor senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz had 13 kills as the Bears downed Sam Houston State, 3-1 (31-29, 19-30, 30-15, 30-23) in non-conference action Monday night at Johnson Coliseum. The Bears snapped the program's eight-game losing streak in Huntsville, winning for the first time here since Oct. 16, 1981.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Spriggs hit .563 with 11 kills, while freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc hit .450 with 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore defensive specialist Marisa Kersten led the Bears (8-6) defensively with nine digs.
SHSU's Carrie Sartain had a match-high 17 kills, while Emily Orlowski had a match-high 10 digs for the Bearkats (4-6).
Even though they were outhit, hitting only .135, Baylor held on in the first game, 31-29. After falling behind, 10-8, sophomore outside hitter Stella Odion served 10-straight points to give Baylor an 18-10 lead. SHSU fought back and cut the lead to 24-21, but Baylor quickly got to match point at 29-24. The Bearkats fought back again, scoring the next five points to tie the game, 29-29, but the Bears won the next two to take the game.
Baylor was sluggish in game two, hitting only .148, while SHSU hit .333. Schwartz had six kills in the game, but the Bearkats evened the match, 30-19.
The Bears played inspired in the third as freshman Desiree Guilliard-Young made her first appearance of the match and quickly making her presence felt with a pair of kills and three blocks (two solo). The Bears scored six-straight points to take a 12-4 lead. With sophomore setter Emily Huston serving, the Bears ripped off seven-straight points, including a pair of aces from Huston and two solo blocks by Guilliard-Young, to take a 23-9 lead. The Bears hit .750 for the game and went on to win, 30-15.
Guilliard-Young, who hit .833 for the match, had three kills in the final game. The Bears hit .344 and took the final frame, 30-23.
The Bears return to Big 12 play when they host No. 10 Kansas State Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
