HONOLULU, Hawaii - The strong attack of No. 2 Hawai'i proved too much for Baylor Friday night as the hosting Rainbow Wahine beat the Bears 30-16, 30-20, 30-26 in day two of action at the Ninth Aston Imua Wahine Classic.
A crowd of 6,386 fans saw Baylor (3-3) give Hawai'i (6-1) a fight throughout all three games. On the night, the Rainbow Wahine hit a astonishing .485 as a team, while Baylor was held to its lowest attacking percentage of the season at .184.
In game one, Baylor was within one point of Hawai'i at 12-11 before the Rainbow Wahine put together a 10-0 run, effectively putting the first game out of reach. National Player of the Year candidate Kim Willoughby accounted for six kills and added four service aces. The Rainbow Wahine hit .500 as a team in the 30-16 win.
Game two brought more of the same; this time, the Bears were within four points as late as 24-20, but Hawai'i scored the final six points to take the game, 30-20. Desiree Guilliard-Young hit .750 (3-0-4) for Baylor, but the Bears could not keep up with the Rainbow Wahine's .514 attacking percentage. Lilu Kahumoku put down five kills in seven attempts (.571) to pace Hawai'i.
Baylor improved his attack significantly in game three, hitting .361 as a squad, but Hawaii still pulled out a 30-26 win to seal the sweep. The Bears hit .361 in the final game, but were still outgunned by the Rainbow Wahine (.452). Stella Odion hit .600 (7-1-10) to lead the Bears' late charge.
Baylor managed more points against Hawai'i (62) than did No. 6 Minnesota (30-20, 30-18, 30-18) or No. 22 Louisville (30-17, 30-24, 30-18) earlier this season. The Bears' 26 points in game three matched the highest total the Rainbow Wahine have allowed in a victory this season.
The Bears conclude action in Honolulu Saturday at 5 p.m. Hawaii time against Wichita State.
NOTES: Baylor drops to 0-4 all-time against Hawai'i (0-2 under head coach Brian Hosfeld)... The 3-0 win was Hawai'i's fifth sweep in seven matches this season... The Rainbow Wahine featured three 2002 all-Americans in Willoughby, Lauren Duggins and Lilu Kahumoku... Hawai'i has won four national championships (1979 AIAW, 1982, 1983 and 1987 NCAA).
