WACO, Texas - Baylor junior Michael Griffin and sophomore pitcher Mark McCormick were named to Baseball America's 2004 preseason all-America team, released Friday.
Griffin, a native of Dallas, Texas, was named to the all-America third team at designated hitter after spending the summer with the USA National Team. As a sophomore in 2003, the junior hit .350 with 11 home runs and a team-high 76 RBI and was named both first-team All-Big 12 and first-team Academic All-Big 12. He set a new school record with 26 doubles while splitting time between left field and third base.
McCormick, also a third-team 2004 preseason all-America selection, is coming off an impressive summer in the Cape Cod League in which he went 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 34 innings. As a freshman in 2003, the League City, Texas, native went 6-3 with a 5.32 ERA, striking out 66 batters in 64.1 innings. McCormick is one of only eight sophomores honored among Baseball America's first-, second- and third team preseason all-America honorees.
Earlier this offseason, Griffin earned first-team preseason all-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) and Collegiate Baseball, while senior relief pitcher Zane Carlson was named to the preseason all-America third team by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball.
