WACO, Texas - Baylor has added freshman Mark Shepherd to its men's basketball squad as a walk-on, head coach Scott Drew announced Thursday.
Shepherd, a three-year letterman from St. Michael's Academy in Austin, Texas, begins practice with the Bears Thursday. His addition increases Baylor's roster size to 14 players, 13 of whom are active.
The 6-8, 210-pound forward helped guide Scott Zimmermann's Crusaders to a 28-7 record and the 2003 TAPPS 5A state championship as a senior. Shepherd averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks and was named to the TABC All-State Large School second team.
Shepherd averaged 11.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 blocks as a junior in 2002 for St. Michaels 31-6 district championship team. As a sophomore he averaged 9.2 points and 8.1 rebounds for the Crusaders' 21-10 district champs.
With Shepherd's addition, Baylor's squad includes eight scholarship student-athletes (seven active) and six walk-ons.
Baylor's next game is Saturday, Jan. 24, at home against Iowa State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live regionally on ESPN Regional.
