WACO, Texas (AP) - Sergio Sanchez drove the right side of the lane and hit an underhand layup with two seconds left to give Texas-Pan American a 55-54 win over Baylor on Tuesday night.
Baylor (5-8) had taken a 54-53 lead with 13 seconds left on a layup by Harvey Thomas. But following a timeout, Sanchez took the inbounds pass in the forecourt and dribbled through two Baylor defenders for the winning basket. Time expired before Baylor could attempt another shot.
Sanchez paced the Bronco's (5-9) scoring with 15 points while Ray Castillo added 12 and Allen Holcomb 11. Baylor's Harvey Thomas led all scorers with 23 points.
Baylor opened the second half with six straight points and went in front 31-26. But the Broncs battled back and tied the contest 33-33. With the score tied 37-37 midway through the second half, Sanchez and Castillo hit back-to-back 3-pointers, putting UTPA in front 43-37. The Broncs extended their margin to 46-38 before Baylor tied the contest 46-46 on Matt Sayman's 3-pointer with six minutes remaining.
After trailing for the game's first 13 minutes, UTPA took a 26-25 halftime lead as the Broncs connected on 6 of 13 3-point attempts.
