AUSTIN, Texas - Men's tennis tallied a handful of victories in the opening rounds of the ITA Central Regional at the University of Texas in Austin Friday.
Barry McLaren and Michal Kokta proved victorious in the early morning round of 128. McLaren defeated Emmanuel Olivier of Lamar after Olivier had to withdraw due to injury. Kokta beat Ian Vazquez of the University of Texas-Arlington 6-3, 6-1. Lars Poerschke and third-seeded Matija Zgaga drew byes in the round of 128.
Zgaga started the tournament the way he wanted, defeating Jordan Freitas of TCU 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in his only singles match of the day. Lars Poerschke overpowered Hubert Chodkiewicz of Texas 6-3, 7-6 on his home court.
Kokta continued his winning ways in his second singles match of the day by defeating Garrett Snyder of Texas 6-4, 6-1. McLaren faltered in the round of 64, having to withdraw due to injury against Ben Harknett of Rice.
In doubles action, McLaren and Kokta faced Nate Avila and Joe Olfindo of UT-San Antonio. The Bears duo lost the match after having to stop short due to injury.
Singles action continues tomorrow for Baylor as the field of Texas and Louisiana participants grows smaller.
