BEARS TRAVEL TO TEXAS TECH FOR FINAL GAME OF SEASON

WACO, Texas-The Baylor soccer team (6-9-2, 2-6-1) closes out the season this weekend as the Bears travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech (3-15-0, 0-9-0) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29.

"We need to finish the season on a strong note," head coach George Van Linder said. "We are all disappointed that we were not able to qualify for the Big 12 Tournament; however, the seniors deserve to leave the program with a win and we have to be ready to play as well as we can."

Throughout the years, Baylor has owned the series with the Red Raiders as the Bears are 8-0 all-time against Texas Tech. Last season, Baylor defeated Texas Tech 3-0 in Waco and has out-scored the Red Raiders 14-0 in the last three contests.

The Bears are led by junior midfielder Tiffany Boshers who leads the team with eight goals on the year. Boshers has seen most of her goals in conference play as she leads the team with six and ranks third in the conference in conference goals scored.

Texas Tech comes into the contest with the Bears after falling at Missouri and Southeast Missouri. The Red Raiders have lost their last 13 contests, with Texas Tech's last victory coming against Angelo State on Sept. 10.

The Red Raiders are led by Priscilla Esquivel who leads the team with seven goals on the year. A trio of goalies have seen action in the net for the Red Raiders, with Megan Knauss seeing the most time of net, posting a 2.80 goals against average on the year.

The game marks the final contest in a Baylor uniform for five seniors as Katie Chicoine, April Robertson, Ginny Rosario-Tull, Kristin Ruef and Lori Viggiano all end their careers following the contest.

LAST TIME OUT - BAYLOR FALLS TO MISSOURI

WACO, Texas-The Baylor soccer team held a 2-1 lead heading into halftime; however, Missouri rallied for two second half goals to defeat the Bears 3-2 in action at Betty Lou Mays Field.

The Bears took their first lead midway through the first half when Tiffany Boshers scored unassisted. Taking a ball up right field, she beat the defense to score from the top of the penalty box. The goal was Boshers' eighth of the season as she leads Baylor in scoring.

Mizzou struck back almost instantaneously, scoring a goal of its own just 24 seconds later. Kristen Heil struck a shot that was deflected off the Bear goalpost. Jennifer Nobis recollected the ball to slip it past Baylor goalkeeper Ashley Holder to even out the score.

Bethany Vick then fed Anna Schuch inside the Mizzou 18-yard box to put the Bears up 2-1 heading into intermission.

Coming back strong in the second half, the Tigers finally capitalized on one of their first 12 corner kicks. Lobbing a ball into the Baylor goal box, Heil hit a header that struck the post. Before Holder could get control of the loose ball inside the box, senior Shea Swoboda swooped in to tap it over the endline and score her third goal of the season.

Melissa Peabody utilized another Missouri cornerkick opportunity to put in Mizzou's third goal of the game and the eventual game-winner.

Overall, Mizzou outshot Baylor 20-to-11 during the game, including a 12-to-7 shot on goal differential.

Holder, who leads the Big 12 Conference in saves per game, made eight saves in goal for Baylor in the loss.

The loss, the seventh one goal loss of the season for the Bears, meant Baylor will not qualify for the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Tiffany Boshers LEADING THE WAY

Since the start of conference play, junior midfielder Tiffany Boshers, an all-conference selection last season, has exploded for the Bears. The standout midfielder has scored six goals in conference play and currently leads the team with eight goals on the season. In addition, Boshers is now tied with Anna Schuch for the team lead in points (17).

Boshers' play has her ranked among the league leaders in several categories. The junior is third in the league with six goals in conference games and ranks fourth in the league in conference points (13).

NEWCOMERS PROVIDING A SPARK

The 2004 season has seen newcomers play a prominent roll in the success of the Baylor soccer team. So far this year, six players new to the Baylor soccer team have seen action in every game, including four who have started in each contest. Two of the top three goal scorers on the season are new to the Bears, as Anna Schuch ranks second with five goals on the season as freshman Margaret Kaderli is fourth on the team with three. Transfer Jennifer Martin has also had an impact on the offensive side of the ball as the junior is first on the team with five assists.

Newcomers have had a tremendous impact on the defensive side of the ball as well. Baylor freshman Ashley Holder has started in all but one game for the Bears, establishing a school record with 15 saves in a single-game with her performance against Notre Dame and currently leads the conference in saves per game. In addition, freshman Megan Sherrell has started every game for Baylor at the defender position.

Ashley Holder EARNS NATIONAL HONOR

Following a weekend that saw her make twenty saves against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, goalkeeper Ashley Holder was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week the website announced. Holder, who also earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, made 12 saves in a 1-0 loss to Texas A&M before making eight stops in a 2-1 Baylor win over No. 22 Texas.

The selection marks only the second time in school history a Baylor player has been named to the website's national elite team. Former Baylor player Ryan Lee was the first Bear to be selected to the national elite team of the week, earning the honor the week of Oct. 21, 2001.
