SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Baylor jumped out and won the first two games, but Texas-San Antonio rallied to send it to a fifth game, where the Bears returned to form to claim a 3-2 (30-27, 30-26, 27-30, 23-30, 15-10) victory in non-conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon at UTSA's Convocation Center. Junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) was all over the court as she had 14 kills, 11 digs and a career-high 10 blocks for Baylor's first triple-double since Tatiana Kenon accomplished the feat against Colorado Oct. 27, 1999.
Sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) led the Bears (11-13) with 16 kills and added nine blocks. Freshman libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) matched her career-high with 25 digs for the second time this week in front of a strong contingent of her hometown fans from nearby Boerne.
Junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) posted her ninth double-double of the season with 46 assists and 11 digs and tied Stevie Nicholas for fourth on Baylor's all-time list with her 124th career ace. Sophomore Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) added nine kills and 11 digs. Freshman middle blocker Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) came one shy of her career-high with five kills and set a new career-high with eight blocks. The Bears also posted the fourth-highest block total in school history with a season-high 22.5.
UTSA (13-13) was led by Meagan Daniel with 26 kills and 14 digs, while Connie Picard and Jennifer Emelogu added 19 kills each. Julia Hunter led the Roadrunners with 24 digs, while Erin McMillan had 21. DeeDee Strickland posted 62 assists and 17 digs, while Brandace Cantu chipped in with 15 digs.
Every time Baylor jumped in front, UTSA had an answer as the Roadrunners overcame a 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead and a 15-11 deficit to tie the game at 15-15. UTSA led 20-18, but Baylor countered with three-straight to take the lead. The Roadrunners came right back and took a two-point lead and forced a Baylor timeout , but the Bears scored three-straight to take a 27-26 lead. UTSA sided out to tie the game, but Guilliard-Young came up with a solo block, Odion killed a UTSA overpass and the pair teamed up on for a on block game point and give the Bears a 30-27 victory. Baylor hit only .136 for the game, but UTSA hit .059 as the Bears came up with five blocks, all in their last 10 points.
Neither team had led by more than two the entire game when Baylor took a timeout with the game tied, 25-25. The Bears came out and took control on a kill by Odion an ace by Huston and a error by UTSA to go up, 28-25. After a Roadrunner sideout, the Bears put the game away with back-to-back kills by Odion and Modglin. The Bears hit .351, posted 5.5 more blocks and registered four aces for the game, while holding the Roadrunners to a .194 attack percentage.
UTSA went on a 10-3 run to take a 13-8 lead in game three, but the Bears fought back and scored four straight to tie the game, 16-16. The Roadrunners later answered by scoring three-straight to go up, 22-18, but the Bears clawed back to within one at 24-23. UTSA then scored the next four points to go up 28-23 and held off Baylor down the stretch to take the game, 30-27. The Bears hit only .087 for the game, while the Roadrunners hit .111 with 20 kills.
Game four started off much like game two with neither team lead by more than two until UTSA scored four straight to go up 22-17 then cruised to a 30-23 win to square the match and send it to a decisive fifth game. The Bears' offensive struggle continued as they hit only .042 with nine kills, while the Roadrunners hit .241 with 22 kills.
Baylor scored the first three points of the fifth game, then later scored five straight to go up 12-5. The Bears won a long rally on a kill by Spriggs to send it to match point at 14-9 and after a UTSA sideout put the match away on a kill by Guilliard-Young.
The Bears return to action when they host No. 15 Texas A&M Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
