WACO, Texas - Baylor sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla) and freshman libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) were named to the 2004 Volleyball Academic All-Big 12 first team, while junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned second-team honors the league office announced Tuesday.
"All three are not only quality athletes, but they're quality people," Barnes said. "They've added a lot to this team. With Adeline coming off her injury and Kristen being just a freshman, they both have joined the team for the first time and contributed a lot on and off the court. Nicole is only a sophomore, so we are very proud of their accomplishments early in their careers."
The trio has been among the Bears' steadiest contributors on the court this season while maintaining their focus in the classroom. LeBlanc is one of only two Bears to start every match and play in every game, ranks second on the team with a .217 attack percentage and 3.03 kills per game and third with 2.59 digs and 1.02 blocks per game. LeBlanc, who was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VI team earlier this month, carries a 3.5 GPA majoring in social work.
Schramek has started the last 17 matches at libero, recording double-digit digs in 16 of the last 18 matches, including a career-high 25 twice. She has hit double-digit figures in digs in 20 of 28 matches and has recorded five digs or fewer only twice. Schramek now ranks 10th in the Big 12 with 3.42 digs per game and ninth in the league with 3.74 in conference matches.
Meira has been one of the main reasons Baylor ranks 15th in the nation in blocks. She is fourth in the Big 12 and 15th nationally with 1.60 blocks per game. Meira has posted three double-digit block efforts this season and also chips in with 1.52 kills per game.
