WACO, Texas - Baylor volleyball has signed Kelsey Smith from Coronado High School in Lubbock to a National Letter of Intent head coach Jim Barnes announced Tuesday. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter will join the Bears for the 2005-06 academic year.
"Kelsey is a completely well-rounded player who will help with ball control and on defense," Barnes said. "She brings an array of skills and will provide some much-needed depth. She's a Baylor kid through and through, so she's going to be a great fit for this team and for the community as well."
Smith has earned three letters for the Mustangs for coach Brandi Cantrell, a former Baylor volleyball player from 1990-93, who Smith said has been the biggest influence on her career. Smith has helped lead Coronado to a 40-3 record and a berth in the state semifinals this weekend. Coronado faces San Antonio Clark Friday night with the winner advancing to Saturday's state championship match.
So far this year, Smith has been named MVP of the San Angelo Tournament for the second straight year and the Seminole Tournament outstanding hitter, with many awards still left to be announced at the conclusion of the season. As a junior, Smith helped Coronado to a 33-7 mark en route to Class 5A all-state, all-district, offensive player of the year and academic all-district honors. She was named Team MVP and received the Mandie Moffitt Award. As a sophomore, Smith was named the District 2-5A Newcomer of the Year and helped the Mustangs to a 28-9 record and a run to the regional semifinals.
Smith ranks among the top 10 percent of her class and is on the honor roll. She is also a member of the National Honor Society , the National Spanish Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Smith also volunteers with blood drives, food banks, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army.
She is the daughter of R. Lee and Ann Smith of Lubbock and plans to major in business.
