WACO, Texas - Baylor's 11th-ranked baseball team dropped their first game of the 2004 season to Loyola Marymount, 8-7, Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Ballpark. The Bears were plagued with pitching problems during the home opener, giving up 12 walks.
LMU (2-0) got on the board early scoring two runs in the top of the first. After retiring the first-two batters, Baylor starting pitcher Sean Walker gave up a walk to Lions' catcher Jonathan Higashi. First basemen Jonathan Oller then doubled scoring Higashi followed by a James Cooper single to center, scoring Oller, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Holding the Lions scoreless in the top of the second, the Bears (0-1) recorded two runs in their half of the inning when junior Drew Sutton tripled to right scoring Seth Fortenberry and Zach Dillion who both reached on walks, giving the Bears a 3-2 lead.
The Lions took control of the game scoring two runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings taking an 8-3 lead heading into the seventh. However, Baylor rallied scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh reducing the Lions' lead to 8-7. Junior Josh Ford singled to right field scoring Sutton and Kyle Reynolds. The Bears finished the inning scoring two more runs recording four runs on three hits for the inning.
Walker (0-1) took the loss for the Bears, going 3.2 innings, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits. Sophomore Steve Kahn (1-0) captured his first win, and Clint McGill recorded his first save on the season for LMU.
Junior second baseman Drew Sutton went 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
The Bears and Lions are scheduled for a doubleheader Sunday to make up for the cancelled Friday game. The first game is set for 11 a.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
