WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's team came from behind to claim a road victory on Saturday when they defeated Florida International, 4-3.
After losing all three doubles matches, Baylor won four singles matches to claim the win, getting victories at Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 1. Freshman Klara Zrustova, junior Daria Potapova and sophomore Iva Mihaylova posted straight-set wins at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Freshman Carolin Walter clinched the match for Baylor with a three set win at No. 1 singles. She lost the first set 6-3 but regrouped and took the second set 7-6, winning 7-4 in the tiebreaker, and claimed a 6-2 win in the third stanza. Baylor's two singles losses were hard-fought contests. At No. 2, Stephanie Balzert took her match to three sets and Covello, at No. 3, lost the first set in a tiebreaker.
Doubles matches were highly competitive as well. Balzert and Potapova, playing at No. 1, lost in a tie-breaker and Walter and Zrustova dropped a close one (8-5) at No. 2. Covella and Izabela Mijic lost 8-5 also.
The victory raises Baylor's record to 2-5 while Florida International falls to 2-3. The Bears will remain in Florida and take on the No. 22 University of Miami on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST).
