WACO, Texas - Chris McCulloch's one-out solo home run in the fifth ended a scoreless tie, and Dallas Baptist added an insurance run in the ninth as the Patriots defeated Baylor 2-0 Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The loss ends Baylor's 14-game winning streak in midweek home games. Meanwhile, it was Dallas Baptist's 12th consecutive victory and 23rd in its last 25 games.
Baylor (16-22) out-hit the Patriots (36-9) but could not get the timely hit, leaving nine runners on base. The Bears put a runner on base in every inning save the seventh, but the Patriots threw out two would-be base stealers and forced Baylor to hit into a pair of double plays.
Dallas Baptist, which also has wins over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State this season, added an unearned run in the top of the ninth. With runners at the corners and two outs, Abe Woody struck out Greg Lindsey to apparently end the inning. However, strike three got past catcher Zach Dillon and Ben Zobrist scored from third.
Baylor starter Andy Pape (1-1) was saddled with the loss despite a solid outing. He allowed one run on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts, one shy of his career high established earlier this season, in 6.0 innings of work. Ryan LaMotta tossed 2.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit with three strikeouts, and Woody struck out two in the final 0.2 innings.
Dallas Baptist starter Jeff Gilmore (9-2) held Baylor scoreless for 5.0 innings, scattered six hits, walked three and struck out two for the victory. Aaron Klusman, the fourth and Patriot pitcher on the night, earned the save with 2.0 scoreless two-hit innings.
Gerdes, Dillon and Reid Brees collected two hits each; Gerdes also walked once.
Baylor returns to action this weekend, hosting Kansas for a three-game Big 12 Conference series at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears and the Jayhawks meet Friday at 7 p.m. CDT, followed by a 6 p.m. Saturday contest and Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m.
