MANHATTAN, Kan. - Sean Walker and Trey Taylor delivered the pitching, and the bats provided the timely hits as Baylor swept Kansas State in a doubleheader at Tointon Family Stadium with a pair of 8-1 victories.
The victories moves Baylor (22-22, 10-8) to the .500 mark for the first time since Feb. 21 and into a fourth-place tie in the Big 12 standings with Texas Tech pending the Red Raiders' night game at Kansas. The Wildcats (22-22, 2-15) drop their 15th consecutive conference game.
Walker (3-5) went the distance for the Bears in the opener, taking a shutout into the ninth inning. K-State finally scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth on a Brian Patty RBI single. Walker scattered nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts for his second complete game of the season.
In the nightcap, Taylor (5-3) also took a shutout into the ninth. After a leadoff Zach Troilo single and a Steve Murphy walk, Taylor was lifted in favor of Zane Carlson. Josh Dent struck out looking, but Nick Ponomarenko followed with a walk. After a fly out to shallow center, Carlson was called for a balk, allowing Troilo to score from third. Taylor finished with one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 8.0-plus innings.
Baylor has now won six consecutive games for the first time this season. It is the longest winning streak for the Bears since the 2003 squad won eight straight in late April. Baylor pitchers have allowed just seven runs in the last five games, holding opponents scoreless in 42 of the last 46 innings.
Kevin Sevigny was the offensive star for the Bears in the first game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and a career-best four RBI. Sevigny drove in the game's first run on a single to center that started a four-run Baylor second. The Bears tacked on two more in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Reid Brees went 2-for-4 and scored three times as Baylor plated six two-out runs.
Kansas State starter Brett Bagley (4-6) took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits and six walks with seven strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
The hit parade continued for the Bears in the nightcap with 15 safeties, including four from the bat of Josh Ford. Kyle Reynolds produced three hits, while Drew Sutton and Michael Griffin rapped two hits each.
In the third, Sutton reached with a one-out single and later scored on a Zach Dillon two-out single to left-center. The Bears added two runs on just one hit and two K-State errors in the fifth, two more runs in the sixth and a Sevigny sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Bears tacked on more insurance in the top of the ninth on a Paul With two-run single up the middle.
Baylor goes for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT. The Bears send RHP Andy Pape (2-1) to the mound opposite Kansas State RHP Jim Ripley (3-5).
