WACO, Texas - Baylor University has signed Kevis Shipman of Tyler Junior College to a national letter of intent, head basketball coach Scott Drew announced Thursday.
"We are excited to have Kevis as a part of our Baylor basketball family." Drew said. "He has been a winner wherever he has gone. Kevis helped his team win a state championship at Dallas Lincoln High School and also helped rebuild Tyler Junior College into a Region XIV contender.
"Both his high school coach Leonard Bishop and his junior college coach Mike Marquis speak highly of Kevis and really value the type of work ethic he provides to a team," Drew said.
Shipman led Tyler JC to a 17-11 record as a sophomore in 2003-2004, averaging 18.1 points and 3.4 assists. He was named to the All-Region XIV first team last season and his 18.1 scoring average ranked sixth in the conference. Shipman shot 40 percent on 3-pointers and 78.8 percent from the free throw line as a sophomore. He was named to the All-Region XIV third team as a freshman in 2002-2003.
The 6-0 guard was a member of the Lincoln High School 2001-2002 state and national championship team that finished 40-0 his senior year. Shipman averaged 11.6 on the state championship squad that included Chris Bosh of Georgia Tech and Bryan Hopkins of SMU. Shipman scored 16 points in Lincoln's 71-51 state championship victory over defending champs Beaumont Ozen.
Shipman is Baylor's third signee of the spring period and the program's fifth of the year, joining Roscoe Biggers of Globe Tech, Aaron Bruce of the Australia Institute of Sport, Mamadou Diene of Senegal and Patrick Fields of Panola College.
