WACO, Texas - Baylor left-handed pitcher Jared Theodorakos has signed with the Milwaukee Brewers of the National League, the Brewers front office announced late Monday. Theodorakos, a fifth-year senior on Baylor's 2004 squad, was a 25th-round selection in the 2003 Amateur Draft by the Brewers, who retained rights to Theodorakos until the start of this year's draft.
Theodorakos, the Brewers' sixth draft-and-follow signing in the past month, will report to the club's extended spring training program in Maryvale, Ariz.
A product of Chaminade Prep in St. Louis, Mo., Theodorakos posted a 3-4 record with a 4.85 ERA in 10 starts during the 2004 season after a 13-month layoff due to shoulder surgery. He recorded 32 strikeouts against 13 walks in 39.0 innings of work and combined on one shutout.
In four-plus seasons as a Bear, Theodorakos was 15-13 on his career with a 4.39 ERA. He finished with 205 career strikeouts against 90 walks in 226.2 innings. Theodorakos made 39 career starts, tied for sixth all-time at Baylor.
A leading candidate to participate for the Greek National Team at the Games of the 28th Olympiad in Athens, Greece, later this summer, Theodorakos will long be remembered for his one-hit shutout against sixth-ranked Southern California at Dodger Stadium during the 2001 season.
Fellow fifth-year senior Zane Carlson has decided not to sign with the San Diego Padres organization, which made the Dallas, Texas, native a 16th-round draft pick last year. Carlson will re-enter this year's draft, which begins June 7.
Baseball America announced its rankings for Texas athletes eligible for this year's draft Monday, including several Baylor student-athletes. Left-handed pitcher Trey Taylor was listed as the state's 27th-best prospect, followed by outfielder Mike Pankratz (No. 33), right-handed relief pitcher Abe Woody (No. 49), third baseman Michael Griffin (No. 50) and catcher Josh Ford (No. 67).
