Wariner, Williamson One Step Closer to Athens

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Baylor sophomore Jeremy Wariner (Grand Prairie, Texas) and junior Darold Williamson (San Antonio, Texas) each ran tremendous races as the duo qualified for the finals of the 400 meters at the United States Olympic Team Trials Monday at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
Williamson ran in the first semifinal and cruised to third with a time of 44.92, his third-best time of the season. Wariner blew away the field in the second semifinal and coasted to a time of 44.81, also his third-best of the year.
The duo was featured on much of the USA Network live telecast of the event. The final will be televised Thursday on USA at 10 p.m., with the top three finishers earning spots on the United States Olympic Team to compete in Athens Aug. 20-29.
Junior April Holliness (Duncanville, Texas) came up short in the long jump, finishing ninth in her flight with a best mark of 6.20 meters to wrap up a brilliant season for the three-time All-American.
