WACO, Texas - The Baylor volleyball team kicked off the 2004 season with the Green-Gold Match, a three-game, hour-and-a-half scrimmage, Saturday afternoon at the Ferrell Center. The Bears play their season-opener under first-year head coach Jim Barnes at Texas-Arlington Wednesday in Arlington at 7 p.m. "It's about what we expected," Barnes said. "We weren't crisp offensively, but we saw some good things defensively. There was a lot of energy and hustle, so I'm pleased with the effort." Junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) had 14 kills, while junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) added 12. Junior setter Emily Huston had 27 assists and chipped in six blocks, and her team won all three games. "Emily runs a steady offense," Barnes said. "When they're not on, she keeps the offense running consistently and has also picked up her game defensively." Redshirts Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) and Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) were solid in their performances coming off season-ending injuries in 2003. "Adeline is only about 75 percent with her knee injury, and no one wants to play more than her," Barnes said. "She could really be key for us when she's healthy, but if she's 100 percent, she could be the difference. Really everyone showed signs at different points during the match." After the opener, Baylor hits the road again for the Magnolia Invitational hosted by Ole Miss Friday and Saturday in Oxford, Miss.
