Women's Golf Finishes 8th at Dick McGuire

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Baylor junior Meredith Jones (Eugene, Ore.) fired a personal-best 3-under par 70 in the final round to tie for seventh and lead the Bears to an eighth-place showing in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico's 6,069-yard, par-73 Championship Course Wednesday.

Jones carded five birdies, including holes one and five to make the turn at 2-under. Jones played the back nine at 1-under, including birdies on 13, 16 and 18, and finished the tournament at 219 (71-78-70).

Junior Josefin Svenningsson (Gislaved, Sweden) and freshman Sian Reddick (Folkestone, England) tied for 27th at 226. Svenningsson (76-76-74) got off to a great start with birdies on one and eight to make the turn at 2-under, but bogeyed three-straight holes on the back nine to fall back. Reddick (75-73-78) couldn't get it going in the final round and finished five-over for the day.

Sophomore Anna Rehnholm (Karlskrona, Sweden) turned in her best performance of the tournament, carding a 74 to finish tied for 26th at 228. Rehnholm played the front nine at 1-under, including birdies on three and seven, and played the back nine at 2-over with a birdie on 10. Junior Sherry Summers (Montgomery, Texas) got off to a good start with a birdie at the second, but three-straight bogeys on the front nine and three more on the back dropped her into a tie for 65th at 236. Freshman Stephanie Waters (Austin, Texas), competing individually, shot an 80 and finished tied for 86th at 243.

Georgia claimed the overall team title by shooting a 4-under par 874, seven strokes ahead of host New Mexico. Pepperdine, BYU and Arkansas rounded out the top five. Georgia's Kelly Froelich fired a 10-under par 209 to finish four strokes ahead of Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin.

The Bears return to action at the Jeannie McHaney Invitational Sept. 24-25 in Lubbock, Texas.
