WACO, Texas-The Baylor cross country team returns to action this week after a two-week hiatus to run in the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004. The men will run an 8,000 meter race beginning at 11:20 a.m. with the women to follow with a 6,000 meter race at 12:10 p.m.
The meet is one of the biggest of the season prior to the conference championship and NCAA championship races. Over 300 teams and 3,000 athletes from around the country will run in the competition on the weekend.
Last season, Baylor had a good showing at the Roy Griak Invitational, as the women raced to a fifth-place finish while the men finished 16th. Returning Baylor runner Brittany Brockman paced the Bears at the meet last season, finishing in 25th place on the women's side. Bo Price led the way for the men last year, finishing in 40th on the men's side.
Brockman and Price will likely lead their respective teams again this year after strong showings by each at the Mean Green Opener.
Brockman, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, won her first career individual title at the event, helping lead the No. 25 Baylor women's cross country team to a second-place finish. Brockman clocked 17:43 on the 5,000-meter course, defeating SMU's Karin Von Rooyen by three seconds.
Price recorded his second career individual win with a triumph at the Mean Green Opener. The junior from Atlanta, Texas, led a one-two-three-four sweep for Baylor as the Bears captured the team championship. Price ran the 8,000-meter course in 25:14, 48 seconds ahead of teammate and second-place finisher Rob Morrow. The win was Price's first since a victory at the Rice Invitational during his freshman season.
For their efforts, both were named Big 12 Cross Country Runners of the Week.
Following the Roy Griak Invitational, Baylor will return to action on Sat. Oct. 16, when the men will run in the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., while the women travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to race in the NCAA Pre-Nationals.
