Volleyball Drops Morehead State 3-0

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) hit .462 with 12 kills and nine digs as Baylor swept Morehead State, 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-21), in the opening match of the Magnolia Invitationalhosted by Ole Miss Friday morning at Gillom Sports Center.
The Bears (1-1) had a balanced attack as sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had nine kills, while junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) and sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.),who led Baylor with five blocks, had six kills each. Junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 30 assists and junior libero Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) led the Bears with 11 digs. The Bears racked up 12 service aces on the match, including five from Huston and four from LeBlanc.
Game one was back-and-forth until the Bears jumped out with a pair of points to go up 11-9 and never trailed again. Baylor led by as many as five points on three occasions, but MSU rebounded to tie the game at 26-26. The Bears then reeled off the last four points to clinch the opening frame, 30-26. Odion led the Bears with six kills in the game, while junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Spriggs and LeBlanc had three each.
Baylor fell behind 5-2 early in game two, but the Bears ripped off six straight points, including a pair of aces from LeBlanc, to take the lead. The game stayed close until Baylor scored five straight, with another ace by LeBlanc, to go up 21-15. After an MSU sideout, the Bears scored four more to go up 25-17. The Bears had match point at 29-21, but the Eagles scored five straight before Baylor closed out the game, 30-26.
The Bears came out hot in game three taking a 5-0 lead courtesy of the first career kill by freshman middle blocker Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas), a kill by Odion and a pair of aces by Huston. MSU stormed back with a 5-1 run and eventually tied the game, 11-11. Baylor then scored four in a row to regain control of the game. The Bears never looked back and clinched the match on an ace by Odion, 30-21.
Jennifer Kennedy led Morehead State (1-1) with a match-high 14 kills and added 11 digs, while Jessica Ayodele added 10 kills. Johanna Thompson had a match-high 14 digs.
The Bears return to action to face Ole Miss, which swept Eastern Michigan in match two, tonight at 7 p.m.
