HOUSTON - Juniors Wil Fitts and Rob Morrow and the men's 4x400-meter relay each recorded victories as the Baylor track and field teams started the 2005 season at the Houston Indoor Opener hosted by the University of Houston Saturday at Bill Yeoman Field House.
Fitts ran a 1:54.47 to take the 800 meters, while sophomore transfer John Robertson finished fifth in the event at 1:57.32. Morrow won the 3,000 meters in 8:41.71, while senior Matt Chance finished third in 8:47.20.
The defending national champion men's 4x400-meter relay team of sophomores Mark Teter and Kevin Mutai, Fitts and senior Darold Williamson clocked a 3:12.88. Teter finished second in the open 400 in 49.06, while Williamson did not run.
The Bears took four of the top seven spots in the mile with sophomore Mitch Sanders finishing second in 4:24.08, junior Bo Price taking third in 4:27.45, Chance finishing fifth at 4:34.34 and freshman Jacob Jones taking seventh in 4:38.84.
Senior Chris Gillis finished second in the long jump with a mark of 24-7 ¼, while freshman Josh Camp took second in the triple jump at 45-11 ¼. Senior Michael Tolbert finished eighth in the shot put with a mark of 47-2 ¼, and sophomore Chris Cardwell took 10th in the weight throw at 41-10. In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Chris Vidrine finished third in 15:53.22, and junior Jerome Miller finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.46.
The women finished 2-3-4 in the 3,000 with senior Jessa Chance finishing in 9:58.04, and freshmen Alissa McKaig and Lyndsy Bedell finishing neck-and-neck at 10:09.69 and 10:09.76, respectively. Sophomore Monique Ortega finished second in the mile at 5:04.94, and freshman Lauren Hagans took seventh in 5:08.20.
The Bears took four of the top 10 spots in the 400 meters with junior Angel Perkins finishing third at 55.92, sophomore Rena Napoleon placing fifth in 56.94, senior Danielle Myricks running seventh in 57.49 and sophomore Lauren Tillman taking 10th with a time of 59.38.
Freshman Carla Grace finished fifth in 24.92, while junior Marquisha Sefas finished eighth with a time of 25.24 in the 200 meters. Senior Lakadron Ivery finished third in the 55 meters, running a 6.98 in the final and 6.97 in the prelims. Freshman Danielle Elliott finished eighth in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:24.64. Freshman Brittany Devereaux finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 47-0 ¾. The women's 4x400-meter relay squad of Napoleon, Ivery, Myricks and Perkins finished fourth with a time of 3:44.45.
The Bears return to action Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
