Men's Tennis Excels in Day Three Regional Qualifier

WACO, Texas - After turning out impressive performances in earlier rounds, Baylor men's tennis continued to win in day three of the ITA Regional Qualifying tournament in College Station, Texas. Baylor took away a quarterfinal win in singles and doubles.
Michal Kokta, the fifth seeded player in the tournament, defeated Andrey Kumantsov of Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a three set match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 earning a spot in the ITA National Indoors. Jon Reckewey also played in the quarterfinal singles round today but fell to Raul Morant-Rivas also of TAMUCC in a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
In doubles action, the eighth seeded team of Reckewey and Matija Zgaga continued to advance when Tulane's team of T. Angelinos and J. Hernandez withdrew from the match due to injuries. Reckewey and Zgaga will take on Goulet and Sottocorno, also of Tulane, in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Sunday.

In other tennis action, competing in the USTA Pro Futures of Waco Tournament, Will Ward, Leos Vanzura, Vladimir Portnov, Matt Brown and Lars Poerschke all won first round matches at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Ward defeated fellow New Zealander Kiril Tchervenaichki 6-2, 7-6(5), Vanzura beat Tony Ro (USA) 6-4, 6-2 and Portnov whipped Alexei Chijoff-Evans (USA) 6-2, 6-0. In addition, Brown, a BU freshman, quickly disposed of Alex Lane (USA) 6-0, 6-3 and Poerschke put 11th-seeded Laszio Toth (Hungary) away, 6-1, 6-2. Action will continue on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
