COLUMBIA, Mo. - Baylor senior outside hitter Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) hit .550 with a career-high 14 kills to lead the Bears as they were swept by No. 12 Missouri, 3-0 (23-30, 22-30, 23-30), in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at the Hearnes Center.
Junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) hit .500 with 12 kills and six blocks for the Bears (14-13, 5-10 Big 12), while senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) had five kills to become the 10th player in Baylor history with 1,000 career kills. Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) added eight kills and is only 14 shy of joining Odion in the 1,000-kill club. Sophomore defensive specialist Heather Marcus (Grand Prairie, Texas) led Baylor with eight digs.
Lisa Boyd and Na Yang led the Tigers (19-3, 13-3 Big 12) with 13 kills apiece, while Jessica Vander Kooi had 12, Nicole Wilson had 11 and Shen Danru had 10. Tatum Ailes had a match-high 13 digs to lead Missouri defensively.
Missouri pushed slightly ahead early, but scored four straight to take a 22-15 lead. Baylor answered back with a four-point run to make the score 23-20, but the Tigers were able to hold on down the stretch for a 30-23 win. Both offenses were effective with the Tigers hitting .483 and the Bears hitting .300.
The Tigers quickly jumped out to the lead in game two by scoring six of the first seven points, but the Bears came right back and cut the lead to 8-7. Missouri gave itself some breathing room with three straight points to go up 18-14 and continued its offensive assault to win the game 30-22 and take a 2-0 lead into the break. Missouri hit .600 in the game, while Baylor hit .424 and got seven kills from Guilliard-Young.
Neither team led by more than two in game three until Missouri scored three straight to take a 22-18 lead. The Tigers were in control in the rest of the way and scored four of the last five points to clinch the match with a 30-23 decision. Missouri hit .400 for the game, while Baylor hit .293.
Missouri hit .486 for the match, while Baylor hit .337. The Bears outdug the Tigers, 34-31, and outblocked them, 6.0-5.0, but the Tigers had five more aces (6-1).
The Bears return home for two straight as they host No. 25 Colorado Saturday at 7 p.m., followed by No. 1 Nebraska Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
