FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Chris Gillis (Pennsauken, N.J.) had a mark of 7.78 meters (25-5 ½) to win the long jump Saturday at the Tyson Invitational hosted by Arkansas at Randal Tyson Track Center. The mark was another NCAA provisional qualifier and just missed the automatic mark of 7.85 meters.
Senior Darold Williamson (San Antonio, Texas) won his third straight 400-meter race, recording a season-best time of 46.13. The time is the fastest collegiate time so far this season. Williamson, joined by sophomores Mark Teter (San Antonio, Texas) and Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) and junior Wil Fitts (Desoto, Texas), anchored the 4x400 relay to a second-place finish in 3:09.02, nearly three seconds behind Arkansas.
Senior Jessa Chance (Southlake, Texas) had the best showing on the women's side, finishing second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:51.38. Freshman Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas) finished eighth in 9:57.98, while freshman Alissa McKaig (New Haven, Ind.) finished 10th in 10:09.19.
Sophomore Brittany McGuire (Humble, Texas) took ninth in the mile in 5:00.55, while senior Lakadron Ivery (Tyler, Texas) finished ninth in the long jump at 19-3 ½.
Junior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) took seventh in the 60-meter hurdles and ran a best time of 7.88 in the prelims. Fitts finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.20.
The Bears return to action at the Big 12 Championships Feb. 25-26 in Lincoln, Neb.
