Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas - Baylor's recently hot bats fell silent Tuesday night as the 12th-ranked Bears dropped a 2-0 decision at Texas-Arlington. The Bears (22-13) fall to 0-2 this season against the Mavericks (20-17).
UTA broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the third. Brock Wilson walked to lead off the inning, stole second and later scored on a Nathan Warrick single up the middle. The Mavericks added an unearned run in the fourth. After a Paul Witt throwing error put runners at second and third with two outs, Baylor reliever Jeff Mandel was called for a balk, allowing Brett Lewis to score from third.
That capped the scoring in a game dominated by pitching. Baylor batters were held to four hits, and the Bears had only seven base runners all night. UTA, meanwhile, managed only six hits and nine base runners. Baylor pitchers recorded eight strikeouts in 8.0 innings, including four in succession by Ryan LaMotta in the seventh and eighth innings.
Dillon Gee (4-3) pitched the complete-game shutout for the Mavericks, allowing four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Andy Pape (1-2) suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing only one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Mandel took care of the next 3.0 frames, allowing only an unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout. LaMotta scattered two hits with five strikeouts in his 2.0 innings of work.
Zach Dillon had two of Baylor's four hits on the night.
Baylor returns to action this weekend, traveling to Lawrence, Kan., for a three-game Big 12 Conference series at Kansas. The Bears and the Jayhawks meet Friday at 7 p.m. CDT, Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
