AUSTIN, Texas --- No. 8 Baylor threatened to score in the top of the first against No. 4 Texas and pitcher Cat Osterman, however, the Lady Bears were unable to get a run across the plate as the Longhorns went on to capture a 1-0 win over BU in action at McCombs Field. With the loss, Baylor falls to 37-7 on the season, 5-4 in Big 12 play, as Texas improves to 31-6, 6-2 in the conference.
Baylor had a chance to get on the board in the top of the first inning after Harmony Schwethelm singled following a Kelly Osburn walk to give the Lady Bears runners at first and third with no outs. Texas starter Cat Osterman worked out of the jam, however, recording the next three outs without allowing a run to cross the plate as the game remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the inning.
A two-out rally put the Longhorns ahead with a run in the third inning. Following a MicKayla Padilla single, Monica Askew doubled to left-center field, scoring Padilla from first to give Texas the one-run lead.
The lead was enough for Osterman, who pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing only two hits in seven innings of work as she improved to 18-3 on the season.
Lisa Ferguson pitched well in the loss as she fell to 14-2 on the season after allowing only one run on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Vitek pitched well in relief for the Lady Bears, keeping the Longhorns lead at one run after working 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Lady Bears against the Longhorns as Texas earned a split in the season series with Baylor.
Baylor will continue its five-game conference road swing as the Lady Bears travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on Kansas. Game one of the two-game series against the Jayhawks is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m.
