Softball Drops Opener to Oklahoma State

WACO, Texas --- After a scoreless seven innings, Oklahoma State hit a three-run, bases loaded clearing double in the top of the eighth as the No. 8 Baylor softball team fell to the Cowgirls 3-0 in eight innings in action at Getterman Stadium. With the loss, Baylor falls to 32-5, 3-2 in the Big 12 Conference, while Oklahoma State improves to 27-10, 2-1 in conference play.
Both starting pitchers were in control throughout as neither team could take advantage of their scoring opportunities in the first seven innings. In the fifth inning, Oklahoma State had a runner at second with only one out; however, Baylor starter Tessa Lynam managed to retire the next two batters as the score remained tied heading into the bottom of the inning.
Baylor's best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the fifth when Kim Wilmoth singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error with only one out. Oklahoma State's Marjorie Johnson worked her way out of the jam; however, as she retired the next two batters to end the inning.
With the score knotted at 0-0 heading into the eighth, Oklahoma State broke through for three runs to take control of the game. Courtney Totte broke the scoreless tie with a bases loaded clearing double to the left field wall as the Cowgirls grabbed a 3-0 lead.
After walking Wilmoth to lead off the bottom of the inning, Johnson retired the next three batters in order as she improved to 9-2 on the season with the win. In the complete game shutout, Johnson struck out seven in eight innings of work.
Lynam suffered her first loss of the year, falling to 7-1 on the season while allowing three runs on five hits in eight innings of work.
Baylor will conclude the two-game series with Oklahoma State when the teams meet on Sunday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m.
