WACO, Texas - With their mentor and Olympic legend Michael Johnson looking on, Baylor senior Darold Williamson (San Antonio, Texas) and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, running his first open 400 meters since signing a professional contract last summer, battled down the home stretch, but Williamson took the edge at the tape to clock the second-fastest time in the country at 45.06 Saturday at the Michael Johnson Classic, while Wariner clocked a 45.13.
Williamson then anchored the 4x440-yard relay to a four-second victory with a time of 3:08.45, preceded by senior Brian McDonald (Houston, Texas), sophomore Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) and junior Wil Fitts (Desoto, Texas).
The Baylor track and field team combined to win 14 events at their final home meet of the season. Junior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) recorded a victory the 110-meter hurdles with a regional qualifying time of 14.24 and took second in the 400-meter hurdles at 52.88. Fitts won the collegiate 400 meters with a regional qualifying time of 46.73, while McDonald won the collegiate 400-meter hurdles with a regional qualifying time of 52.45.
The women had another tremendous meet, winning nine events. Senior Lakadron Ivery (Tyler, Texas) won both the 100 meters with a regional qualifying time of 11.43 and the 200 meters with a regional qualifying time of 23.81, although she ran 23.57 in the preliminary heat. Ivery led the Bears to a sweep of the top four spots in the 100 with senior Elizabeth Wilson (Duncanville, Texas) coming in second with a regional qualifying time of 11.54, freshman Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas) coming in third with a regional mark of 11.74 and senior April Holliness (Duncanville, Texas) finishing fourth in 11.85. The Bears also took the top four spots in the 200 with Ivery followed by Grace with regional qualifying time of 23.89, Wilson recording a regional qualifying time of 23.72 in the prelims and 24.08 in the final and junior Marquisha Sefas (Fort Worth, Texas) taking fourth in 24.61.
Ivery also anchored the 4x100-meter relay to victory with a regional qualifying time of 44.21 and ran the second leg of the winning 4x440-yard relay with a time of 3:39.05. Ivery was joined on the 4x100 by Grace, Holliness and Wilson, while the mile relay consisted of Grace, Ivery, senior Danielle Myricks (Willingboro, N.J.) and junior Angel Perkins (Cerritos, Calif.) on the anchor.
Sophomore Rena Napoleon (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the collegiate 400 meters in 55.08, while Perkins finished second in the invitational division with a regional qualifying time of 53.72. Freshman Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.) took second in the 800 meters with a regional qualifying time of 2:07.57, while Myricks finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a regional mark of 58.34.
In the distance events, sophomore Monique Ortega (El Paso, Texas) easily won the 3,000-meter steeplechase by nearly a full minute with a regional qualifying time of 10:33.06. Senior Jessa Chance (Southlake, Texas) won the 1,500 meters in 4:32.37, and sophomore Brittany Brockman (Houston, Texas) took second in 4:35.95. Sophomore Brittany McGuire (Humble, Texas) won the 5,000 meters in 17:13.58.
In the field events, freshman Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas) broke her own school record in the discus for the second straight week, winning the event with a regional qualifying mark of 49.39 meters (162-0). Holliness won the long jump with a leap of 6.20 meters (20-4).
The men took second, third and fourth in the 1,500 meters with sophomore Mitch Sanders (Katy, Texas) coming in second at 3:48.53, junior Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) finishing third in 3:53.49 and junior Rob Morrow (Grapevine, Texas) taking fourth in 3:58.49. Sophomore Chris Vidrine (Georgetown, Texas) finished second in the 5,000 meters in 15:12.13, while freshman Jacob Jones (Willis, Texas) finished third in 15:14.91.
Junior Chris Gillis (Pennsauken, N.J.) took third in the long jump with a mark of 7.26 meters (23-10), while sophomore Chris Cardwell (Abilene, Texas) finished third in the hammer with a throw of 47.80 (156-10).
The Bears return to action at the Drake Relays Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
