2005 NCAA MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Baylor University - Waco, Texas
POSTMATCH QUOTES
First Round - #29 Texas 4, #37 Rice 3 - May 13, 2005
Texas head coach Michael Center:
On No.1 matchup between Callum Beale and Robert Searle:
"Every time we play Rice, it's a highly competitive match and it comes down to the very end. Robert Searle is such a good player and I have so much respect for him. We were just lucky to get through that game and hang on. It could have gone either way at that point."
On the doubles point:
"I knew it was going to be important because I knew it was a very even match. When you get two teams that even, one point can make a huge difference. I knew that was a critical point and they had switched on doubles, they had two new teams at No.2 and 3 so I felt like we had a little advantage in that our teams had been together and played well and they came through and won those two games."
Rice head coach Ron Smarr:
On his team's chances with the No. 1 match between Beale and Searle: "It's one of those things where anything can happen when you get in the third set. Robert (Searle) is one of the best players in the country, no doubt about it, and Beale (Callum) played well."
On the match overall:
"My big disappointment is our No. 3 doubles team. Up 3-1 and no offense to Texas' team, we just kind of handed them two games, and that's what really hurt us. That really killed us, No. 3 doubles, because I knew the doubles point was important. When you lose four points, you never blame one player, three others lost, too."
"You have to finish matches, but No. 1 singles did not lose this match. If I want to lay blame on something, we just played very poorly at No. 3 doubles."
