Softball Drops Game One to No. 2 Cal

WACO, Texas --- With the aid of four unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning, the No. 2 California softball team captured an 8-0 victory in six innings over the No. 10 Baylor softball team in game one of the NCAA Waco Super Regional. With the loss, Baylor falls to 50-13 on the season while Cal improves to 51-12 on the year.
After a scoreless first two-and-a-half innings, Cal broke through with four unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Alex Sutton doubled to left field to score Jessica Vernaglia to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. The, with two outs, a throwing error allowed two Cal runners to score to give the Golden Bears a three-run lead. Finally, on a single to left field by Haley Woods, Kaleo Eldredge came around to score on a fielding error as Cal grabbed a four-run lead.
Cal added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab a seven-run lead heading into the sixth. The key hit in the inning came when Chelsea Spencer drove home two on a double to left while Jessica Pamanian added a RBI fielder's choice in the inning as Cal took a 7-0 lead.
After Baylor was unable to score in the top of the inning, Cal ended the game in the bottom of the sixth when Lindsay James scored on a fielding error, Baylor's fifth of the game, as the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
Kelly Anderson improved to 28-7 on the season after allowing only three hits over six shutout innings in the complete game victory.
Lisa Ferguson fell to 20-6 on the season in the loss after allowing four runs, all unearned, on five hits in three innings of work.
Spencer led the way for Cal, going 2-for-3 with two RBI as the Golden Bears won their fifth straight game.
The best-of-three series between Cal and Baylor will resume on Saturday, May 28, when the teams will face each other in game two of the series at 1:00 p.m. Should Baylor capture game two of the series, game three will take place approximately 30 minutes following game two to determine who will advance to the NCAA Women's College World Series.
