Shoppach Heads to the Show

Shoppach, who was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and won the Johnny Bench Award as the nation's top catcher in 2001, was a second-round draft selection by the Red Sox following that season. In 40 games and 140 at bats with Triple-A Pawtucket this season, Shoppach hit .279 with 11 home runs, eight doubles, 28 RBI, a .571 slugging percentage and a .392 on base percentage.
In three years at Baylor, Shoppach hit .333 with 26 home runs, 69 doubles, 121 RBI and a .576 slugging percentage. In two seasons as a starter, he committed just three errors in 844 total chances for a .996 fielding percentage and threw out 42 of 100 would-be base stealers. In 2001, Shoppach hit .397 with 12 home runs, 20 doubles, 69 RBI, a .654 slugging percentage and one error.
Shoppach joins Colorado Rockies' right-hander Jason Jennings and Pittsburgh Pirates' right-hander as the only former Bears currently on Major League rosters.
