The Baylor volleyball team released its 32-match 2005 schedule, which features 17 matches against 10 opponents that advanced to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, head coach Jim Barnes announced Wednesday.
"The 2005 schedule is loaded with 15 matches against ranked opponents," Barnes said. "The pre-conference schedule will be a very good test for our team and will help us prepare for Big 12 play. Tennessee will be ranked in the top 10 and will be a great challenge early in the season."
As part of new NCAA legislation, volleyball teams will be allowed to begin the season one week earlier than previous years, and the Bears will open on the road against Louisiana Tech Aug. 27, followed by a neutral-court match later that evening against Northwestern State.
"This season, for the first time, we will start a week earlier and that will give us a great chance to develop the team in two tri-matches the first two weeks of the season," Barnes said. "We believe a great winning tradition in volleyball here at Baylor is about to begin."
Baylor will host North Texas in the home opener Sept. 3 at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup against Barnes' alma mater, McNeese State, that evening at 7. The Bears will also host Texas State on Sept. 6 before hitting the road for seven straight.
The Bears will play in a tournament hosted by Tennessee Sept. 9-10 in Knoxville, Tenn., facing the Lady Volunteers, College of Charleston and Central Michigan. Baylor opens Big 12 Conference play on the road against Texas Tech Sept. 14, before heading to a tournament hosted by Northern Arizona Sept. 16-17 in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Bears will face Gonzaga, UTEP and host Northern Arizona.
Baylor will face Big 12 opponents in all but one of its remaining 20 matches, including the conference home opener against Iowa State Sept. 21. The Bears have back-to-back road matches to open October with a tough test at Nebraska (Oct. 1), which is expected to be a top-ranked team, and at Colorado Oct. 5, before playing three straight home matches against Texas (Oct. 8), Oklahoma (Oct. 12) and Kansas State (Oct. 15). The Bears only remaining non-conference match is at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Oct. 25.
The Bears split time with four at home and four on the road in November. Baylor hosts Texas A&M (Nov. 2), Colorado (Nov. 12), Nebraska (Nov. 16) and Texas Tech in the season finale Nov. 26.
Texas State, Tennessee and College of Charleston are the non-conference opponents that made the NCAA Tournament last year, while seven Big 12 schools (Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Kansas State and Texas A&M) earned invitations.
