WACO, Texas --- For the third time in her career, Baylor softball player Kim Wilmoth has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. Wilmoth, a senior shortstop from Garland, Texas, was a first-team selection and was the only Big 12 Conference student-athlete to make one of the three teams.
The selection marks the third time in her career Wilmoth has been selected for the award, as she was a third-team selection following her sophomore season and a second-team selection following her junior year. In four years at Baylor, Wilmoth compiled a GPA of 3.91 and graduated in May with a degree in accounting.
Wilmoth is only the fourth student-athlete in Baylor history to be named Academic All-America for three seasons. Wilmoth joins Doug Brandt (Men's Basketball, 1995-97), J.J. Joe (Football, 1991-93) and Melanie Hagewood (Women's Golf, 2001-03) as the only three-time Academic All-America selections in school history.
The honor adds to a long list of academic and athletic accomplishments for Wilmoth, as she is a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 Conference selection and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of her first eight semesters at Baylor.
Wilmoth has also been tabbed three times for first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VI honors, including a selection to the team this year. She joined senior pitcher Cristin Vitek, junior outfielder Kelly Osburn and pitcher/first baseman Tessa Lynam on the academic all-district team this season.
Throughout her four years, Wilmoth has combined academic success with athletic success on the field. She was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference selection this season after earning second team honors following her sophomore year.
This season, Wilmoth led the team with a .401 average, becoming only the second player in school history to hit over .400 in a season. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports
