Stanford Advances with 6-2 Win over UTSA

WACO, Texas - Stanford starting pitcher Matt Leva hurled five shutout innings as the Cardinal jumped out to a six-run lead on Texas-San Antonio and went on to defeat the Roadrunners 6-2 in an elimination game at the 2005 NCAA Waco Regional.
With the win, Stanford improves to 33-24 on the season and advances to face the loser of the Baylor-TCU game at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 5.
UT-San Antonio is eliminated from the tournament with the loss and finishes the season with a record of 27-34.
The Cardinal got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning when Adam Sorgi hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Jim Rapoport, to give Stanford an early 1-0 lead.
Chris Lewis gave the Cardinal a two-run lead when he lifted a solo home run, his seventh of the season, over the left field wall with one-out in the fifth inning as Stanford grabbed a 2-0 lead.
John Mayberry, Jr. then put the Roadrunners away in the sixth when he hit a three-run shot well over the left field wall, scoring Michael Taylor and Jed Lowrie as the Cardinal took a five-run lead.
After Stanford added a run in the seventh, UT-San Antonio's Michael McKannon cut the lead to four with a two-run home run over the right field wall; however, it was not enough as the Cardinal went on to claim a 6-2 win.
Leva picked up the win for Stanford and improved to 5-2 on the season after allowing no runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Matt Manship tossed a perfect 2.2 innings of relief, striking out four, as he picked up his fourth save of the season for Stanford.
Steven Vasqez took the loss for UTSA and fell to 4-2 on the season after allowing five runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Sorgi and Mayberry, Jr. each had three hits in the victory for Stanford as Eric Moreno and Ryan Crew collected two hits each in the loss for UTSA.
