KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Baylor junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the all-tournament team, recording a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs as the Bears downed Central Michigan 3-1 (26-30, 30-19, 30-19, 30-20) to salvage a split at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic Saturday afternoon at the Stokely Athletic Center.
Senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) led the Bears (6-2) against the Chippewas, hitting .519 with 16 kills and eight blocks, while senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) added 11 kills and seven blocks. Senior outside hitter Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) had 10 kills, while sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) tied LeBlanc for the team lead with 12 digs.
Sophomore defensive specialist Heather Marcus (Grand Prairie, Texas) made her first career start, and redshirt freshman outside hitter Krystle Everett (Crandall, Texas) put away the match with her first career kill.
Mary Ochmanek and Kate Fissel had 12 kills each to lead Central Michigan, while Alison Baker added 10. Ali McCrite had a match-high 18 digs for the Chippewas, while Sarah Warner added 11.
After a slow start, the Bears rebounded and hit .257 for the match, while holding Central Michigan to .110. The Bears outdug the Chippewas, 54-47, and outblocked them, 14.0-7.0.
College of Charleston 3, Baylor 0
Senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) hit .500 and outside hitter Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) hit .348 as each had 12 kills to lead Baylor, but the Bears were not sharp defensively in a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-25) loss Saturday morning.
Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) added 11 kills, while sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) had a match-high 20 digs.
Annie Uthe and Amanda Timmers each had 13 kills for the Cougars, while Tiffany Blum had 11. Marie Dobrenz led College of Charleston with 14 digs, while Timmers had 13 for a double-double.
College of Charleston hit .328, while Baylor hit .236. The Bears were outdug, 49-48, for the second straight match, but the Bears outblocked the Cougars, 8.0-7.0.
The Bears return to action when they open Big 12 Conference play at Texas Tech Wednesday at 7 p.m. at United Spirit Arena, then head straight to the Fiesta Bowl Friday and Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz., where they will face Gonzaga, UTEP and Northern Arizona.
