TOPEKA, Kan. -- Jessica Bush's goal in the 20th-minute proved to be the difference as the Baylor soccer team fell to Kansas 1-0 in the conference opener for both schools. With the loss, Baylor falls to 2-6-1 on the season, 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference as Kansas improves to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win.
After a scoreless first 19 minutes of action, Bush put the Jayhawks on the board when she took a cross from Caroline Smith and scored from 10-yards out to give Kansas a one goal lead. Holly Gault was also credited with an assist on the play as the Jayhawks jumped out on top.
The goal proved to be the difference as Baylor was unable to crack the Kansas defense the rest of the way. Baylor's best chance to tie the game came in the 51st minute; however, Jessica Hutton's shot off a corner kick was saved at the line by a Kansas defender as the Jayhawks came away with the conference opening victory.
Baylor's Ashley Holder played well in net for the Bears in the loss, making 10 saves in the contest. It marked the third time this season Holder has made at least 10 saves in a match.
Colleen Quinn made six saves in goal for Kansas and recorded the shutout victory.
For the contest, Kansas out-shot Baylor 21-14 while holding a 10-7 edge in corner kicks.
The game, originally scheduled to be played in Lawrence, Kan., after moving from Waco, Texas, was played in Topeka, Kan., due to heavy rains in the Lawrence area.
Baylor will look to post its first conference victory of the year on Sunday, Sept. 25, when the Bears travel to Columbia, Mo., to face Missouri at 1:00 p.m.
