2005 Roy Griak Invitational Complete Results
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Baylor women's cross country team raced to a third-place finish at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational as Brittany Brockman led the way for the Bears, finishing in sixth-place. On the men's side, Baylor finished in 27th-place as Jacob Jones was the first Baylor runner to cross the line.
"The women's team ran extremely well," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We were the youngest team among the top-five and it shows the future of the women's cross country team at Baylor is bright. I thought we took off a little to fast to start the race; but, overall, it was an excellent performance."
11 of the top 30 teams in the country ran in the race as Baylor managed to defeat all of them but Arizona State, which finished first, and host Minnesota, who finished second.
For the third consecutive race, Brockman was the first Baylor runner to cross the line, finishing in sixth with a time of 21:08. Freshman Erin Bedell was the next Bears runner to cross the line as she was the highest freshman finisher in the race, finishing 16th overall with a time 21:36.
Lauren Hagans was the third Baylor runner to cross the line for the Bears, finishing in 29th-place with a time of 21:57.
"I thought Lauren (Hagans) had a great race for us today," Harbour said. "She continues to improve and improved her time tremendously from the time she had in this race last season."
Monique Ortega, who is returning from a hamstring injury, was the fourth Baylor runner to finish with a time of 22:18, finishing in 50th-place as Lyndsy Bedell rounded out the scoring for the Bears, finishing in 76th-place with a time of 22:45.
On the men's side, Baylor finished in 27th-place as Jacob Jones was the first Baylor runner to cross the line, finishing in 139th-place with a time of 26:37 on the 8,000-meter course.
"It was a learning experience for our extremely young men's team," Harbour said. "I think they are disappointed; but, they competed hard."
John Wenhold, Jordan Hiller, Rey Hinojosa and Mark Smith also scored for the Bears.
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Bears run in the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
